Recycling Guide

Here is how to sort your recycling, according to the NYC Department of Sanitation:
Mixed Paper & Cardboard

Green bins, clear bags, or bins with a green decal

  • Envelopes
  • Paper
  • Magazines & Catalogs
  • Newspapers
  • Pizza boxes (No food scraps)
  • Smooth cardboard & tubes
  • Paper bags
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Phone books & soft cover books 
  • Corrugated cardboard (flattened) 

*Staples are ok, no spiral bindings or hardcover books.

Plastic & Glass Bottles, Beverage Cartons, Metal & Foil

Blue bins, clear bags, or bins with blue decal

  • Metal Cans
  • Plastic Jugs
  • Plastic & Glass bottles & Jars
  • Wire hangers
  • Household metal (eg pans, irons)
  • Metal file cabinets
  • Milk & Juice Cartons
  • Empty Aerosol Cans
  • Aluminum products (trays, foil, etc)

*Empty, clean containers without caps or lids.  Labels are ok.

*Do not include other plastics such as deli/yogurt containers, styrofoam, plastic toys & furniture or other types of glass such as mirrors, light bulbs, ceramics, or glassware.
